I was immediately attracted to lumen printing, a camera-less process that produces one-of-a-kind, magical images of botanical subjects, when Kate Jordahl introduced me to the technique in 2012 in a class at Foothill College. Each print is created by placing plant material directly on a sheet of photo-sensitive paper and exposing it to sunlight. The paper is then chemically fixed in solution for permanence, resulting in a unique plant portrait called a lumen print, a version of a photogram. I love lumen printing's unpredictability; each combination of plant and paper brings out unexpected beauty and simplicity. (Another example on this website is the gallery called "Florascura.")
