The soft flesh of succulents contrasts with the thorny defenses they brandish, and they express a sensuousness that belies their harsh native environment. A macro lens allowed me to get up close and personal with this duality, focusing on hairy appendages, sharp protrusions, alluring cleavages, stiff tentacles, and fleshy curves. I shot the images on 35-mm black-and-white film in the Arizona Cactus Garden at Stanford University.
